Nominalisierung
Nominalization
In German, some words which are not nouns can go through a process called nominalization (Nominalisierung) so that they can be used as nouns. Although many word classes can be nominalized, it usually happens to verbs and adjectives, like in the following examples:
• grillen → das Grillen:
• gut → das Gute
• kochen → das Kochen
• schön → das Schöne
Verb nominalization
To nominalize a verb you need to write it in its pure form, without conjugation, capitalized. The nominalization should happen when...
• An article is present before the verb (and also when it could be inserted there):
• After the following prepositions combined with articles: beim (bei dem), zum (zu dem), vor dem, nach dem, für das, mit dem
Adjective nominalization
In order to nominalize adjectives you need to write them capitalized and also add an "e" at their end:
The nominalized adjectives appear frequently after words like nichts, alles, etwas, viel, wenig, viel, allerlei, manches:
Ich wünsche dir alles Gute. (gut)
Klaus erzählte viel Nettes von Ihnen. (nett)
Declension
The declension of the nominalized adjectives works just like the usual adjective declension:
